The action of the Chinese in freeing the prisoners was in happy contrast to the treatment – often a bullet in the back of the head – prisoners had received from the North Koreans. At one point the Chinese actually set the severely wounded men on the litters along the road, then draw back and held their fire while our medics in trucks came to retrieve the injured men. Moves of this sort by the Chinese in fact were prompted by the Chinese ignorance of Western life, ignorance rooted in their controlled upbringing. For the Chinese captors had sent the captured soldiers back to our lines after adjuring each to “tell his comrades” of humane treatment he had received and to urge them all to “turn their guns against the officers” and thus free themselves from the opposition the Chinese had been taught to believe all the victims of capitalism suffered. Perhaps they confidently expected to see whole divisions of our troops responding to this invitation to flee the capitalism Hell and come sample the freedom of the Red Paradise.

The Chinese, we were to learn, was tough and vicious fighter who often attacked without regard for casualties. But he was a more civilized foe in some respects than we found the NKPA to be. In many instances he shared what little food he had with his prisoners and treat them with kindness, very likely to impress him with how much better he would lively to impress him with how much better he would live under Communism. When we retook Seoul we found he had not wantonly destroyed building materials we had brought in to repair the bombed city, but in his advance from Yongdong-po to Suwon he had systematically put the torch to houses in the villages.

But even now I am not convinced that the country should not be told that war means killing. I am by nature opposed to any effort to "sell" war to people as an only mildly unpleasant business that requires very little in the way of blood.
