A)sam·bu·ca(sm-bū'k, sm-bū'k)

n. An Italian liqueur made from elderberries and flavored with licorice.

B)Italian; liqueur flavoured with liquorice and elder berry (Sambucus nigra). Traditionally served with coffee beans in the glass, and set alight.

C)[sam-BOO-kuh] A colorless, anise-flavored liqueur made in Italy, sambuca is based on the elderberry. The fruit of the elder, of the genus Sambucus, is the origin of the name. It's drier (see dry) than most potables of its kind and is frequently served with 3 to 4 coffee beans floating on the surface. The liqueur is ignited, which "roasts" the beans and infuses the liqueur with flavor. Sambuca negra is a dark brown, coffee-flavored version.

D)Serving: Sambuca can be served neat, as Ammazzacaffè or just as refreshment.

E) Serving with toasted coffee beans

In Italy it is common to serve neat Sambuca with some floating coffee beans dropped on it: it is called Sambuca con mosca (literally, "Sambuca with flies"). The beans are there as an ornament, but they can be chewed to exalt the taste of anise. An Italian tradition is to put three coffee beans representing health, wealth and happiness (or luck).

F)Sambuca - The most popular brand of Sambuca and the most renown is Sambuca Molinari, but Sambuca Romana works fine too. Sambuca is made with star anise and white elder flowers. It is served as digestive, or, with the addition of water, as a long (and refreshing) drink. If you order this in a restaurant, you will typically see 3 coffee beans floating in it, (called Sambuca con la mosca - Sambuca with the fly) signifying health, happiness and prosperity. "Three" is very often symbolic for many reasons, but also because odd numbers are considered luckier than even ones.
