(1) Open control panel, open “Regional Options” applet.

(2) On the “General” tab, go to see the lower portion “Language for system”, make sure “Simplified Chinese” is checked.

a. If you can view Chinese, most likely it’s checked already. Go to (3). If not, check it, click OK.

b. Clicking OK will cause the system to install programs necessary to allow you view Chinese in all text display programs, such as Internet Explorer, Notepad, Word….

c. You will probably prompt to insert the original W2K CD, or point to the network share where you installed OS. You know, this is just like the usual installation of any Windows component.

d. This installation will cause a reboot. After reboot, you need to go back to (1).

(3) Select tab “Input Locales” (the last tab on the applet)

(4) Click button “Add”

(5) The first list box is “Input Locales”. Select “Chinese (PRC)”

(6) The second list box is “Keyboard” (bad term, I’d say), select “Chinese (Simplified) ?C MS-PinYin 98”

(7) Click OK all the way.

(8) Walla! Now you can input Chinese: You will see there is a small “EN” icon on your quick launch tray on the right of your tool bar.

(9) To input Chinese, open a notepad, press left Alt + left Shift to toggle between EN (English) and CH (Chinese).

(10) If you have never used Microsoft PinYin, it is a fantastic feature developed by Microsoft Research Center in Beijing. The way it works is, you go ahead to type all words of one sentence in PinYin. The Chinese character selection bar will go right below your cursor. But don’t try to select it word by word. The PinYin IME will automatically adjust the words based on guessing what you try to say in this sentence. If you are writing some common sentence, the guess correction rate is quite high. After you hit a sentence ending punctuation, like a comma or period, check to see how it works, and use arrow key to move left or right to correct the words it guessed wrong. Then click enter or space to confirm it and continue the next sentence. And it learns the way you talk too. To configure further the way it works, click that icon in the launch tray, select “Show the language bar”, the icon turns into a tool bar on the top of screen, then click the down arrow on the right of tool bar and select “Settings” to further configure it, for example, you can set to allow southern Chinese accent (e.g., when Shanghai or Cantonese people had problem to tell s and sh in PinYin).

如果你是XP，步骤和上面说的大同小异。

在书写一般句子是，智能拼音是挺管用的。但是对一些特殊词，任何输入法也是无能为力。

但是你可以加入自己的词汇。

比如，我就把逆水寒加入到个人词库中。个人词库的词一般是比标准词库中的词先被选用。

方法：

Online User-defined Phrase

User would define a phrase while editing a text file:

If "User-defined phrase" is not enabled, enable it.

In the editor, type the phrase and leave it in the compose window.

Modify the Chinese characters of compose window until the correct phrase appears.

Select the phrase in the compose window, then press ENTER.
