I mused aloud, after I finished rereading A Tale of Two Cities in our little room, half expecting T. and the investigation group to appear in any moment, "I used to have much more sympathy for Madame Defarge than I do now." Madame Defarge, a character in the book who kept knitting as the accused were executed, had been, in my opinion, well justified in her desire to seek revenge against the French aristocracy, but now I began to identify with some of the innocent people whose prosecution she caused.

"Well, willy," Mother asked me in response to my statement about Madame Defarge, "If you were there and you suffered innocently, then would it mean that the French Revolution was unjustifiable?"

"I suppose not," I replied, hesitantly.

"You would have a choice," she said. "You could cry 'woe is me' and just lie down and die, or if you did survive, you could try to understand and learn from the experience." I was not surprised by what she said. I knew which choice she had made.
