For kids in those circles, life is non-stop competition, in school, in student societies, in non-school activities, and money spent on kid's

--in-school education AND

--EXTRA-CURRICULUM activities

are just amazing. I do not even mention all the time spent by parents (mostly, their "soccer" mom") on those activities.
