There's no rule which limits feelings towards the other gender. Of course, intimate relationships with other gender provides the benefit of having off-springs and pass on your genes. And that is the biological foundation of "love" in the traditional sense.

But in nowadays, genes isn't the only thing worth passing on. Your characters, world views, and thoughts are all worthy things to pass on. I can see same gender families work in the sense of raising children and passing those things on. I think that's the foundation of legalizing same-sex marriage.
