NZ firm in hot water over deadly Chinese baby formula

New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra is being criticised for remaining tight-lipped about a scandal involving contaminated milk formula in China.

One baby died and more than 400 became ill after drinking milk formula made by Sanlu, a company part-owned by Fonterra.

Fonterra owns a 40 per cent share in the company and has admitted that it knew the formula was contaminated last month.

Rodger Spiller from New Zealand's Centre for Business Ethics says Fonterra needs to front up.

"It certainly does and it raises questions about how Fonterra is applying its code of ethics which it publishes locally around principles like product safety and moral courage and leadership," he said.

Fonterra says it is seeking a meeting with the Chinese Government but has refused interview requests.

Nineteen people have been arrested over the contamination in China.

They are accused of adding the toxic substance melamine, which is used in plastics and cleaning products, to boost protein levels.
