家园 观察到最富的一小撮纳税很少,的确是不公平

do not rush to the conclusion.

In N.A., gov. has the following taxes

1.Income Tax

2.Sales tax

3.Estate tax (also called death tax)

4.Real estate property tax

5.Capital gain tax

2.Sales tax--equal for everybody.

1--is based on ANNUAL INCOME

3/4/5 are based on ACCUMULATED WEALTH

最富的一小撮纳税很少--you are talking about the accumulated wealth. 纳税很少--BUT you are implicitly comparing their income taxes.

Rich people might not have ANNUAL EARNED INCOME, that's why their INCOME TAX is lower, but their other taxes are not low at all.

1.If you have $1m house, your annual property tax can range from 10k to 40k (Texas is like that, a bit higher rate).

2.When one dies, he or she also trigger the death tax (called estate tax). Last time I check the table, it is around 40% at the marginal rate after first 2m exemption.

In sum, you need to make clear

1.Annual low tax does not mean LOWER OVERALL TAX OVER A LONG window.

2.Annual low INCOME TAX does not mean you have lower ANNUAL TOTAL TAX BURDEN.

BTW, real estate tax is collected at the local city/county level, most people will not know it from textbook until you live in one place.

BTW, Canadian's tax burden is even worse than in States.
