Calif. Jury Finds Peterson Guilty of Killing Wife

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (Reuters) - After a trial that attracted nationwide attention, California fertilizer salesman Scott Peterson was found guilty on Friday in the Christmas Eve 2002 first-degree murder of his pregnant wife and second-degree murder of his unborn child.

Peterson, 32, was charged with murdering Laci Peterson, who was eight month's pregnant at the time of her death. The bodies washed ashore in April 2003 along an area of the San Francisco Bay where Peterson said he was fishing the day Laci disappeared.

He could face the death penalty in the case, although sentencing will take place at a later date.

The case attracted widespread media coverage, perhaps because many Americans were taken by the story of how an attractive, typical California middle-class couple was struck by tragedy.

Prosecutors said Peterson murdered his pregnant wife on Christmas Eve 2002 and dumped her in the San Francisco Bay. They said Peterson pretended to be concerned about his missing wife when he was more interested in his mistress, Amber Frey.

Defense attorney Mark Geragos said that Peterson was framed and that while prosecutors may have made jurors hate his client for being a liar and an adulterer, they provided no motive and no evidence to connect him with the murders.

The verdict came after two jurors were unexpectedly removed from the sequestered jury in recent days.

After initially receiving the case on Nov. 3 after five months of testimony, the jury restarted their deliberations for a second time on Wednesday afternoon, took the day off on Thursday and quickly came to a conclusion on Friday morning.
