The Only Russian Aircraft Carrier to Undergo Upgrade

The heavy aircraft carrying cruiser of Russia's Northern Fleet, "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov," will undergo full-scale upgrade at the Sevmash ship building enterprise, Lenta.RU reports.

Work on the overhaul and technical improvement of the aircraft carrier will begin in 2012. The renovated ship will again be launched in 2017.

Within the framework of the upgrade, the weapons systems and aging electronics on the "Admiral Kuznetsov" will be fully replaced. As is expected, the ship's air wing will be increased. Inasmuch as the aircraft carrier must undergo a full-scale replacement of equipment, work may be concluded later than 2017. In particular, work began on the "Admiral Gorshkov" aircraft carrier being upgraded for the Indian air force ((sic)) in 2004, and it had been planned to hand over the ship in 2008. In 2010, the timetable was slipped to 2012 - 2013.

Engineers of a Ukrainian Black Sea plant, where the aircraft carrier was launched in 1985, may take part in the upgrade of the "Admiral Kuznetsov." However, concrete agreements on joint work still have not been achieved.
