The climbers killed in Sunday’s avalanche on Mount Manaslu, one of the giant peaks in the Himalayas, might not have been on the mountain had it not been for heightened tensions between Chinese authorities and Tibetans.

Bikram Neupane of the Kathmandu-based Himalayan Rescue Association, which helps mountaineers in distress, said China’s ban on permits for climbing the northern side of the Himalayas may have added to the dangers.

About two dozen of these climbers were asleep in their tents at a camp high on the 8,156-metre mountain when the avalanche hit them early Sunday. Rescuers have so far brought down the bodies of eight victims: four from France, one each from Germany, Italy and Spain, and a Nepalese guide.

Tibet is a sensitive region for China, and relations between local Tibetans and the Chinese government have been especially volatile this year. Many Tibetans have set themselves on fire in recent months to draw attention to what they say is Chinese repression.

During times of tension, China will occasionally limit access to Tibet for foreign tourists. It has restricted the number of permits issued to climbers in the past and stopped issuing them altogether in 2008 while Chinese climbers carried the Olympic torch to the top of Mount Everest in the lead-up to the Beijing Games.
