Hong Kong Harbor in Hands of British

Fleet Speeds Reoccupation

By WIRE SERVICES

YDNEY, Australia -- A strong British naval task force, led by the new 35,000-ton battleship Anson, entered Hong Kong harbor today for the reoccupation of that Crown colony on China's southern coast.

A communiqué from the British Pacific Fleet headquarters here said the forces were under the command of Rear Admiral C. H. J. Harcourt, who entered the harbor aboard the light cruiser Swiftsure.

The force of nineteen ships and eight submarines had a commonwealth flavor, for it included seven Australian minesweepers and the Canadian armed merchantship Prince Rupert.

In the line of warships also was the 23,000-ton aircraft carrier Indomitable, which operated for a time with the United States Third Fleet while it was smashing Japan.

Bids British Quit Island

CHUNKING -- The influential Chunking newspaper Ta Kung Pao today urged the British to return Hong Kong and Kowloon to the Chinese. Originally Chinese forces had planned to occupy Hong Kong but desisted in deference to the British.

Administration Set Up

MACAO, South China -- Conditions in Hong Kong are fairly good, E.P. Gimson, a British representative newly released from internment, reported over the Hong Kong radio today.

Speaking as the chief representative of the British Government now resident in Hong Kong, he announced that he had established a British administrative office in the city of Victoria, capital of Hong Kong Island, with the concurrence of the Chinese authorities.
