  • 家园 【原创】Match Point观后感

I am not superstitious at all. But I do believe in destiny. Sounds a bit ironic, huh? Well, no one can deny how important the luck is. The famous line from the move is “The man who said that I’d rather be lucky than good save deeply in life”. Believe it or not, the luck will turn one’s life upside down.

The movie is well written and produced. Excellent work from award winning director Woody Allen.

The story line is simple but well designed. Chris played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, a young tennis pro, who realizes that he might not have what it takes to be a successful tennis pro, finds himself a job as tennis coach at up class tennis club. He coaches a rich playboy Tom played by Matthew Goode. Later on, Tom introduced him to be the coach for his sister Chloe played by Emily Mortimer, who is genuine but naïve girl. Chris approached Chloe and they got married soon after. Chris finally got his pass to live in the life he had been dreaming about, since Tom and Chloe are from a wealthy family.

Chris set his feet in a wealthy family by just being lucky. He had everything he can imagine in life. Chloe’s father set him up in his financial firm. He met his old friend once, he mentioned that he has money he dreamed off. By far, everyone would assume that he would have settled with this life with money and beautiful wife he gets. Somehow Chris wasn’t satisfied, he got attracted by Tom’s girlfriend Nola played by Scarlett Johansson who is a struggling actress. Nola is beautiful and sensational. Chris risked what he had and was involved in an affair with Nola. I guess he just was sexually attracted by Nola. It is more erotic feeling than “love” I guess. Chris was traveling in two different world at same time, one was with his wife and possession he desired, another was with his lover and sexual fulfillment.

Well, life isn’t about getting all you want. Most of time, you have to choose one way or another. Nola got pregnant, she pushed Chris to tell the truth to his wife Chloe and demaned to get married with Chris. This was a wakeup call for Chris. He finally had to give a hard look on what he wants in life. Money or Love. He made up lies to Nola to try to sort out the dilemma. He was struggling with life decision and was at the most important crossroad in his life. Eventually he realized that he couldn’t go back to where he was before and loses all the money and life style he was enjoying. After Nola increasingly pressured him and threatened him to tell the truth directly to his wife, he had decided to make Nola disappear from his life.

He had a thought-out plan. He stole a hunting gun from his father-in-law. Then he pretended to go playing tennis and carried the gun to Nola’s place. He tried to portrait a robbery scene. He cold-blooded shot Nola’s old neighbor and took away her jewelry, so it would look like a robbery case. Then he killed Nola on her way into her apartment, so it would appear that she was shot during interruption of robbery case. After he killed her, he returned the hunting guy back to his father-in-law’s place. He would have caught when he prepared to kill Nola by his wife, but again he got away each time lucky.

After the murder case, the detective found some involvements and traces back to Chris. At couple of situation, he looked really suspicious and was going to be exposed nearly. The most important evidence of the murder case was the gold ring that Chris tried to get rid of after crime on the pavement. Ironically, the ring didn’t fall into the sea when he tried to throw away, but was picked up by a drug addict, who was found dead. The ring bounced the hand rail bar, but fell on the pavement instead of in the water miraculously.

At the end, Chris was found “innocent”.

It is kind of true that luck plays huge impact on one’s life. There doesn’t seem any rationale behind why fortune happens to whoever. Sometimes, it just does. Greed, obsession, and self preservation are human nature. We are not so far away from animal to some extent.

Let’s wrap up this interesting movie with the open voice lines from Chris:

“The man who said “I’d rather be lucky than good” saw deeply into life. People are afraid to face how great a part of life is dependent on luck. It’s scary to think so much is out of one’s control. There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of net and for a split second it can either go forward or fall back. With a little luck it goes forward and you win. Or maybe it doesn’t and you lose”
